About the Garden District
The Garden District lies between St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street, from 1st Street to Toledano Street, as the City Planning Commission draws it. The National Historic Landmark district extends a little farther.
It was first laid out with only a couple of houses to a block, each set in a large garden, which is how the district got its name. Many of those big lots were subdivided in the late 19th century.
