About the Irish Channel
The Irish Channel sits between the Garden District and the river. As the Historic District Landmarks Commission draws it, its boundaries are Magazine Street, Jackson Avenue, the Mississippi River and Louisiana Avenue.
It was settled largely by Irish immigrants in the 1830s, many of them hired to dig the New Basin Canal, and is still full of 19th-century shotgun houses. Built on the city's old high ground, it escaped the flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
